[Menvi-discuss] Question about preference for multi line Braille display

My preference would be 2 lines.

I have put it to Humanware that it wouldn’t take a huge reconfigure to squeeze in a second line of dots, use the same routing keys above for both lines with just an extra button at the end that toggles the routing keys for top or bottom line.

I think all the non musicians out there just think I’m mad and say that in a market that has so few purchasers anyway to further narrow it to those who do music and want two lines would never fly.

I can see some use for the Canute if you need to edit chamber music or orchestral scores, but for just reading them, I think an embosser is a better option and have hard copy than something so big and heavy and non portable, it is less portable than a Braille book.

But I would love those two lines for piano, violin duets, melody with chords, melody plus lyrics, etc.

Hi Chris, this is a very good and interesting question. Keep in mind, I have never tried a multi-line braille display before, so it'd be useful for those who have tried a multi-line display to chime in at some point. I agree that for piano music in particular, the odd number of lines can definitely cause potential havoc. That said, an odd number of staves would be less of a problem for, say, organ music, which has three staves (though there are far fewer people who play the organ so optimizing it for piano makes sense in a way). Some chamber music and orchestral scores will have odd numbers of lines depending on how many instruments are in a particular score, but again, it depends.
