[Menvi-discuss] Transcribers

It is definitely not a perfect system as it relies on the libraries in each country both joining, continuing to share all their newly added materials as well as uploading their back catalogue and making sure members have access. Unfortunately often people find that when they inquire about this they hit library staff who don’t know what it is or how to use it even if the library is joined and in the case of Braille music they may not have enough music skill to be able to properly search out the correct title.

However, it is the largest catalogue and if people keep pushing their blindness organisation libraries to resolve these issues it has the potential to be huge. Canada seems to be particularly difficult being one of the major contributors to the catalogue meaning I have access to all of the CNIB catalogue that is there and yet Ella in Canada can’t download from it as they haven’t signed individuals up for the member catalogue and internal library policies and procedures with CNIb/CELA seem to make getting anything from them difficult.

I think this is going to take individuals in each country to continue to press for this access.

I'm in Canada, and unfortunately the major Canadian library that most blind Canadians have access to cannot sign up to ABC. Also, I've found that there are a lot of items available on NLS that have not been uploaded to ABC, and I'm sure there are braille music libraries in other countries like Spain, Italy, Scandinavia, etc, that have not made their way to the ABC catalogue.

Hi Dwald,

The main catalogue for Braille music Internationally is the global book service hosted by the Accessible Books Consortium (ABC). Member libraries can request titles from this and if they are also signed up to the members supplementary catalogue then individuals can direct download. This catalogue currently holds most of NLS titles, all CNIB titles and many other libraries. I believe RNIB has recently joined and I’m looking forward to seeing their titles start appearing.

Am I correct you are in South Africa? If so I can see in the list of member countries that for South Africa the library listed is the South African Library for the Blind. They should be able to search the ABC catalogue for you and download on your behalf. I can’t see how far through the membership process they are, so hopefully you will find they are fully joined. Better yet if they have also joined the members catalogue so they can approve a membership for you and you can search and download for yourself.

The music on ABC varies in quality, formatting and age. But it is all professionally transcribed.

Hi Dewald, I mean, there are various catalogues of braille music held by national libraries for the blind e.g NLS in the US or RNIB in the UK, but if you aren't from that country, you usually can't download anything from there. A lot of it is primarily a matter of what music you need personally and getting it transcribed. If you are encountering incorrect notes or symbols going from MusicXML to braille, that is generally not the fault of braille translation, but rather an error in the MusicXML file itself. The only way to fix it is to have a sighted person look over the notation/XML file. Going from PDF to MusicXML to braille is always going to result in errors without sighted assistance because PDF to XML involves an optical recognition process that is error prone. I hope this helps.

Hi list.

I was wondering if there was an online library of Braille Music transcribed by actual transcribers?

I'm just having a bit of a difficulty converting xml or pdf scores to brf.

How can I go about if I'm looking for a specific piece or pieces.

I've also noted some errors by converting scores this way.

I mostly play piano pieces but would also like to experiment playing harp and cello pieces.

Can anyone help me, and refer me to such a library or else to transcribers?

Thanks

Dewald
