[Menvi-discuss] Screen Readers for "Brf" Music Files

Hi,
I am using NVDA with my Brailliant display to read music. You have to set
the input and output Braille tables in the NVDA Braille settings to English
Us 6 dot computer Braille. Even then I have had some issues with many
software programmes I am opening or creating Braile in not displaying
correctly. Sao Mai Braille had some additional formatting characters
displaying and I can't get Braille Blaster/Braille Zephyr to display
correctly at all. Perky Duck works perfectly but as it does not open brf
files I will be getting Duxbury to work with.
In the mean time I usually open brf direct to read on the display without
involving the computer as it eliminates much of the issues.
As someone else has already said you can't really get NVDA to in any way
read out Braille music. Like with any Braille it will read out the various
askii codes so you will get gibberish of letters and punctuation marks
replacing contractions. If you know what these are you can sort of read it
for literary Braille, but to try and also interpret what each of these
replacements would mean in a music context would be almost impossible for
even an experienced musician.
However, if someone is needing to use screen reading for menus etc but has
some sight to see the Braille on screen then there should be no issue with
NVDA with any of the programmes as in most cases it is displaying correctly
on screen, just not coming through to the display correctly.

Subject: [Menvi-discuss] Screen Readers for "Brf" Music Files
On behalf of friends who are not MENVI members, I am wondering whether
anyone uses NVDA or another screen reader to decipher "brf" files of braille
music scores. Any information about such experiences would be most welcome.
Thank you!
Karen Gearreald
