Hi Timothy,
I play piano as well (or I used to.) Now I just play for fun 
every once in a while.  I had the same problem when I was taking 
lessons.  Unfortunately, I think the only way to correct this is 
by feel.  It may take some time before your hands get used to the 
motion so don't be afreacd to ask your teacher to repeat as many 
times as necessary.  My problem was that my teacher did not 
realize until years later that I was playing with flat fingers.
