[Menvi-discuss] Transcribers

Hi Dewald, Jing-Shan & list,

I have found similar frustrations I have met with people in India, Malaysia and Philippines. Their country is listed on ABC and a library noted there that should be able to provide access to ABC even if only in the limited way of via the library getting it for them rather than giving direct access. And yet when they have contacted that library they have just hit road blocks.

I think though that as Stephanie said it will take people continuing to advocate with their own countries libraries to gain this access firstly to get them to get items on your behalf and secondly to push them to sign up to the members supplementary catalogue and give direct access to individuals. It is worth writing to managers and any sort of governing body of the organisation.

I wonder if there is some sort of legal requirement within the Marrakesh treaty that each country has passed as law that says that the blindness services library must serve all the blind people in a particular region and if this is the case knowing what those details are might help. It might be worth a number of people contacting ABC and asking what assistance they can provide with how to go about advocating in your own country for the things that should already be in place and are not.

I also wonder if it might be worth anyone who does not currently have access to the ABC catalogue to search to ask why it is not open for anyone to search so that at least if you are requesting a title via your own library you can give an exact book number, title, etc.

Jeanie

Hi everyone

I'm also in South Africa. Firstly, I want to say that I also have SO much trouble finding scores. My situation is that, unlike 99% of other blind people in the country, I graduated high school in a mainstream school. The National braille music library and transcription services are based in one of the country's bigger schools for the blind, and they refuse to transcribe things for me stating that it's because I didn't graduate from the blind school. It's either that or they charge me ridiculously expensive prices. But Dewald, what do you need? Because I might have some of them? Secondly, the blind organisations are not doing much over here. At least that's how I feel. Sometimes I reach out because of needing something or wanting support with something and I get nothing. But most importantly, I want to find out if there is a way to get music accurately transcribed, that's affordable? Are there any transcribers who you could recommend and who are affordable? Since the transcription service here is not being as national as they say they are, and I'm needing music all the time (since I'm studying music). And yes, even the music transcribed here aren't always very accurate. Even if they're "professionally" transcribed.

Also, my apologies if this just sounds very negative. But I am somewhat frustrated and have been for a long while now. That plus the universities not doing much of advocating for us blind students, is just tiring me out. The fact that any professor even expects of me to make a poster presentation with photos and videos for an assignment, fails to understand why I say that's not possible, and this after four years of studying in the same university, is beyond me. The upside, at least I'm graduating in December. Hopefully I can go and do my Masters somewhere else abroad. I know it's not all sunshine and roses, but at least there is more focus on accessibility and inclusivity, from what I hear.

They should be, since they were transcribed professionally. However, if you wanted something from the NLS collection, you would have to ask someone to download it for you, as you can't download NLS materials from South Africa, though you can certainly browse the catalog. Also, not all of their titles are available in an electronic format. You need to check each page and make sure BARD access is available. If BARD access is not listed, then the title is only available in hard copy braille and you won't have any way of getting the hard-copy-only stuff.

Re Golden Chord: They are no longer actively transcribing, and if one wants to purchase anything from their back catalog, that request goes through what seems to be a third-party braille production company. They do have some unusual titles, though.

I don't know if Prima Vista is still active, either. They did some student jazz piano books that made their way into the NLS collection, but I haven't been able to find Prima Vista online.

Hello Dewald,

Golden-Chord has some pieces. Primavista is another website. I'm sure there are others and transcribers on this list will hopefully get in touch here to let you know if they have libraries of pieces they have transcribed.

Very best wishes,

Sandra.

Hi list.

I was wondering if there was an online library of Braille Music transcribed by actual transcribers?

I'm just having a bit of a difficulty converting xml or pdf scores to brf.

How can I go about if I'm looking for a specific piece or pieces.

I've also noted some errors by converting scores this way.

I mostly play piano pieces but would also like to experiment playing harp and cello pieces.

Can anyone help me, and refer me to such a library or else to transcribers?

Thanks
