I played guitar. People worried about calluses and I switched from steel to
nylon strings, but my experience was that any calluses developed on the
fingertips and I read braile with the pads.

Hi,

Some years back I played the guitar. I had a Spanish style guitar which has
nylon strings. I believe they are not as harsh on the fingers as are steel
string instruments. However, I had carpel tunnel syndrome in both my hands.
I'm not saying the guitar caused it because everything I do and other blind
people do is with their hands - they become our eyes to some extent. Any way
the guitar neck for my hands was wide and I found it difficult fingering
many of the cords especially barred cords. It was around that time I
switched to violin and found it so so very much easier to finger and slide
to different positions for different octaves. I eventually required surgery
on both my hands to treat the carpel tunnel & had also developed what are
called trigger fingers. Lucky for me the surgery was like magic and I was
sorry I did not have it done sooner rather than later. 

I love the violin and don't often look back to dreams of playing guitar
since then, but I do still love the sound of guitar music.

I wonder if that has anything to do with fears of desensitizing fingers
playing string instruments?
Has anyone actually experienced this, or is it just a myth!

Hi,

ABRSM offers free downloadable braille music for their piano and flute
exams. I've asked about violin in the past and was told they weren't
considering it at the time. (Apparently, they choose the instruments that
have historically been most popular with braille music users, which is how
we got piano and flute!)

You should find free, downloadable Braille scores for your instrument.
I know they deffinitely have the pieces for the various grades, voice and
piano.
