Will the same suggestions work for Piano music?

Hi Dana,

I’m not a wind player, but as a violinist I struggle with the same sort of things regarding articulations and bowings.

I haven’t found a great method for this challenge yet, but the one I’ve had the best success with is memorizing very short sections of the music from the braille score and singing it or otherwise performing it in some physical way not attached to the instrument, and either do the articulation (like tonguing etc.) or otherwise use a word (like “up” or “down” for my bowing) for the affected notes.

I find that I want to try to learn and memorize larger chunks than I can thoroughly absorb articulation for, and as a result, my impatience gets the better of me and I play correct notes but not always proper articulation and bowing.

This is definitely a work in progress for me, especially since I finally started taking regular violin lessons with a teacher about a month ago.

I hope this helps maybe a little.

I am beginning my 7th

Year of flute lessons. I have braille music scores, and my teacher records all pieces and exercises. I have problems memorizing the proper articulation for pieces. I try to look for patterns to help me memorize the proper slurs and tonguing, but I often still am incorrect. This is frustrating because I work very hard to be accurate. I would appreciate any advice other flutists or wind instrument players may have for me to help me in memorizing the proper articulation. Thank you.
