i don't do them in a university setting. i do them from my home. and, when i give lessons the only thing i'll do is show you some cords, some picking stragities if you wish and let you go. i believe your teacher shouldn't be a teacher as much as a director.
let me explain what i mean. i don't believe there's a write or a wrong way to play guitar. now, people would argue with me on that but seriously, there's no write or wrong way to do it. remember, it's all theory and theory can be bent and even changed. you should hold your guitar so as it feels write to you. after all, you are the one playing it.
i have a friend up in Charlotte NC who holds the neck of his guitar against his ear and he makes beautiful music and that's my point. the guitar should work with you as you work with it. now, i hold my guitar regularly but i do taps and harmonics and chicken picking all in 1 so that's again, my point. every instrument should be manipulated to get the sound you want out of it. sure, there's people who might say that my ideas are wrong and that's fine but what makes them wrong? how about conventional thinking.
my personal thoughts on this is there's no write way or wrong way to do something. actually, the only wrong thing is not experimenting in my humble opinion.
so, what i do for students interested in guitar, i show them the conventional means should they wish to do them but i also tell them to experiment and to find their own way to make their own sounds. basically, everything i show is because the person want's to be shown it. if you just want to bounce questions and ideas, that's fine as well. i do this stuff for free because i believe information should be shared freely.
