That is exactly how I learned breath control for trumpet I had my
trumpet instructor at the time when I was in high school let me feel his
diaphragm if I am indeed spelling that word correctly smiles, and then
I'd try to imagine an air balloon, then he would put his bell of his
trumpet against my diaphragm and so on and so forth. My uncle Max a
guitarist and singer also taught me breathing techniques hands on as
well and he told me to try to hiss like a snake a little bit at a time
and see how much air you can hold before you begin to "pop" the balloon
slowly he says as you hold a pillow to your chest to see how it raises.
You must be relaxed and not tense up because that will definitely strain
you. Wow it sure pays off though because I never would have made it
through the tricky odd syncopation rhythm of the "Amen" line over and
over in the "Rutter Gloria" when I was in the Collegiate Singers at The
Master's College in Santa Clarita California in 2006 the only girl in
the tenor section.
