if it's a classical guitar with nylon strings, I would get someone 
to show you how to tie the string off at the bridge. That part 
would be tricky to describe in words on here.

But yes, generally, you can leanr to do whatever basic maintenance 
you need, usually by getting someone to show you hands on.
