Knowing how to read meter and count it are essential for learning
music by using braille notation, and even more important when learning
by audio. It is really important that you have the capability to if
not have a few key measure numbers in your head, (E.G. the development
of my piece starts at measure 75 and the recap starts at 100, so if my
teacher says a measure number I can at least tell what section of the
piece I'm in), to be able to at least pick up on how to count the
sections out. It is also important for counting in mixed meter pieces
like Mr. Coates described. My wind ensemble has a piece on our
concert which alternates between measures of 5/8 and 7/8 time in a
section. All I know between my entrances is the number of measures,
so I have to constantly think, "1 2, 1 2, 1 2 3, 1 2, 1 2 3," in order
to keep my place.
Definitely get together with an instructor or a qualified student so
they can help you with this.
