Hi all,
I do count the beats, but you can usually tell fairly easily.  
It's hard to do this with out some sort of music to go by.  
Usually, if there is more than 4 16ths in a row, you use the dots 
36, then 8ths for the other 3 16ths.  So I look for that too.
