Outstanding advice!
Also, if you want to see a ton of four-part writing--some more successful than others--consider downloading one of the hymnals available through NLS Web-Braille. Even if it's only one volume, if you've got access to a Braille embosser, emboss that volume and work your way through it.

Brandon:
The best advice I have every had is analyze the music that sounds good to you. All good music requires good voice leading for it to be successful. The basic concepts of parallel 3rds and 6ths and doubling of 8vas and 5ths will be common to all, but the use of expanded harmonies and suspensions will provide you the styling skills you are asking about. A block style harmonic structure can be restrictive compared to using contrary or countrapuntal aspects. Focus on tension and release aspects. Unison voices between males or females can give you greater flexibility in your melodic writing. Finally, music is represented by sounds and silences so consider using an occasional rest value to replace a doubling.

Hello,
I’m wondering if anyone has any good ideas on how to keep track of SATB writing? I’m reading the rules, but I can’t see the pretty pictures it’s supposed to be making. I'’m now just following the rules of only doubling the tonic and dominant, resolving down to the tonic from the 7th, only removing the 5th, and not crossing voices. I am having trouble looking out for parallel octaves or 5ths, the 4 types of motion, extended leaps and just checking my work in general.
I’m using Lime atm, but I don’t have a Braille display yet... I’m trying to get one though.
Any suggestion's on how to easily follow these rules would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
