Hello,
I read that article in the second newsletter about following the conductor. It wasn’t really helpful when you’re a soloist, but I definitely do all that when I’m in chorus. 
I would like to know though:
Who’s Maureen Carole Young? 
She sounds like someone who would be good to talk to. What is her vision and why don’t I get anything when I Google her name? If she was at the Met she would be at least in the Metropolitan's Archives. Did she have a stage name?

Everyone has their own idea of what a half note is. The conductor makes sure that everyone starts on time. It is also the conductor's job to make sure certain sections aren’t going to fast or too slow. 
I watched a Vanclibern (The big piano competition) and the conductor was explaining why he was so important. He also explained why it was so important  for people to follow him rather than him follow the performer. He stepped off the stage and said play and it was chaos. It was like practice room at its loudest... He then told the pianist to play and not pay attention to the conductor. It was OK, but there was some obvious discrepancies between the piano and orchestra. Then the conductor had the pianist follow the conductor and everything was amazing.
Granted singing is a little easier to control than a piano in the matter of changing keys or rhythm, so that is why Bocelli is able to listen for his queues while still knowing the conductor will follow.
As for the wand needing to be balanced, I am pretty sure there is some equation that feels better to the conductor, but they have a big nob on one end and a stick sticking out. I’ve not used one, but I think as long as the wand is able to move in the hand very smoothly and it isn’t too heavy, there won’t be much problem. But I know a conductor will need to talk with the developers long and hard to create something usable.

  Conductors also give phrasing, dynamics, nuance, and other small details, not just rhythm.  More musicians get together, more difficult to agree on how the music should be shaped.  Conductors job is to keep the orchestra together.

If sighted people know rhythm, why would they even need a conductor?

A conductor's baton is a visual sign to sighted players.

Maybe you guys are looking for a MAGIC wand.
