[Menvi-discuss] Sight-reading

Hello,
In the performing world no one has to do anything.
ADA only kicks in when things aren’t subjective. In a world where there is
no way to prove someone's not hiring you because you just don't fit the
part, nothing can be done but become better.
Many of us are at the point to where the only thing holding us back is the
fact there is no practical way to convince directors and conductors we are
able to be equal to our sighted piers in performance. Right now we need to
eliminate all the top arguments that are thrown at us and not following the
wand is the top.
Bocelli went into concert and classical cross-over because that is where he
was welcomed. I'm pretty sure any decent blind classical singer could make
fame if they had the drive. Classical cross over is much easier to get into
because the public is begging for it. Every classical singer who has gone on
those talent shows has had a nice time in fame and they aren’t blind.
Bocelli is the perfect package to sell and the number one marketing value is
he's blind.
Opera is totally different. Directors think about the amount of time they'll
loos working with a blind person. They are scared of how much money they'll
spend making things work for a blind performer. In the pop world those
things aren’t factors. All someone needs to do is get an album and market
the **** out of it. Opera is filled with old misers who don't want change.
(That's why they're watching opera!)
In this world of tradition we must present ourselves as people who do
EVERYTHING the same as a sighted person on the surface. We've fixed the
auditioning problem, we are able to learn music and now we need to fix the
working problem, we need a baton we can see.
Thanks,

Brandon Keith Biggs

Hello,
I agree. Although I do read braille music, I still have to
anticipate the music to "! degree. I participated in my opera
scenes as well two years ago. I was given very limited roles and
did not have any solo parts because I am extremely shy. As for
professional, I really don't know much about performing
professionally so it's difficult to say exactly whether they will
jive you a chance. But I would guess that if they were required
to give accommodations, they would most likely at least let you
try.
