How can you memorize?  If you're playing from memory,  where do you look?  
If I were in the audience, it would spook me out to see  someone playing and 
looking at me the same time. 
 
My repertoire is memorized, so I play from memory except for  band and 
opera parts, and a few things I use for wedding  ceremonies.
 
I think it is a much more effective performance if the player  is looking 
at their instrument and not sitting and reading off music, no matter  what 
instrument it is.  It's distracting, and you wonder how many more  pages there 
are.
