It was not until tonight that I was able to take the time to read this memoir. It was well worth the time.
This is a beautiful story which is beautifully written.
Turns out that I too love that song, "I Can't Get Started with You", and have performed it with a local bigband here a number of times. But that's a different closing verse than I sang. I took my lyrics from a record of Bunny Berrigan singing and playing the song. I think the final verse was something like:
I've been consulted by Franklin D.
Greta Garbo has had me to tea.
Still, I'm broken-hearted,
'Cause I can't get started with you.
But mainly this wonderful story made me aware of how blessed I have been by teachers like this author. They gave me gifts at a time when I did not even know I was being gifted. They did their work because they loved me and loved doing their work. What a precious thing it is to read about someone who did the work and lived to savor the fruit of his labors. To quote another lyric from one of my other favorite trumpet players: "What a wonderful world!"
You go, Chela!
