Braille Music is a new world for my daughter.  She has been learning it for a couple of years now, and I just want to take a moment to thank all of you who have put your blood, sweat and tears into developing the code, computer programs and the continued interest in this field.  So sorry to hear of Bettye's passing, too, but very, very grateful for her passion in Braille Music.Vicki Fleming(Mom to Beth Fleming)

Dear Richard, thank you for letting us all know about Bettye's passing.  To
all of you who knew her personally, I send my own condolences.

I have so many fond memories of her.  Right from our humble beginnings back
in the early '90's, she never failed to encourage Albert Milani and me in
the development of our GOODFEEL Braille Music Translator.  As you know, she
called a spade, a spade.  When we didn't get something right, she let us
know that too.  

If braille music had not worked out for Bettye, she could have done very
well for herself as an international peace negotiator.  Back in 1997, she
completed years of work in compiling the very first international manual for
any braille code.  In doing so, she brought together experts from, I
believe, 18 countries who all, let us say, had their own definite opinions
about what certain things should mean in braille music code and when and how
the code should be used.  Bettye managed to get everyone to at least agree
on the signs to be used and allowed us all to agree to disagree at times on
when certain signs were required and in what format.  I remember her telling
me that she was particularly happy about the compromises on the dots to be
used for the braille clef signs.

I especially cherish the memory of Bettye's words on the occasion of her
official retirement at a meeting I attended in September, 2004, in Zurich,
Switzerland.  The leaders of the subcommittee on braille music of the World
Blind Union presented Bettye with a gift after lunch.  In her simple and
direct way, she thanked us all in a very brief speech.  The line that
impressed me most, which I hope to never forget, was when she told us: 

"What I have done, I did because I wanted to do it."

Beautifully simple eloquence.  That line tells you so much about this dear
lady who I do think of as the fairy godmother of braille music. May she rest
from her many labors in peace and contentment.

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Bettye Krolick last
evening. She is known to most of us as "The Godmother of Braille Music."

More will follow as soon as it becomes available.

The inspiration for your network, and the enormous advances in music braille
and its technology, can be greatly attributed to Bettye and to all of those
whose lives she touched.

As for myself, she was a mentor, and a substantial inspiration for the
methodology and presentation of my courses. She will be missed beyond words.
