there are definite ways of doing things right and incorrectly. My
professor would agree; he tells his private students and his studio
class that if you just want to play Jimmy Buffet tunes and that's it
you can play any way you want, but if you want the option of going
beyond that and working towards learning classical pieces or something
of that nature then technique isn't unimportant. The choice is up to
the student, and I know someone who plays the guitar overhanded as
opposed to underhanded and still can play beautifully, but the tambour
isn't the same and he's got very interesting and somewhat awkward ways
of technique. (He taught himself to bar chords with his pinky). Bear
in mind though that depending on what you're choosing to not do the
traditional way that there may also be physical risks involved too.

humble opinion.
so, what i do for students interested in guitar, i show them the
conventional means should they wish to do them but i also tell them to
experiment and to find their own way to make their own sounds. basically,
everything i show is because the person want's to be shown it. if you
just want to bounce questions and ideas, that's fine as well. i do this
stuff for free because i believe information should be shared freely.
