Bettye Krolick is responsible for turning my music
career around. I had studied under Edward and Stella Jenkins (you know,
the guy who wrote the Primer) but I had no patience for or use for Braille music
since I could learn it all by ear. In college, my teacher insisted that I
learn my music using Braille music. Neither of us knew what to do about it
though. I had hated that primer and didn't think it would work. But
somehow, through inquiry of NLS I think, he was put in touch with Bettye
Krolick. We both talked to her on the phone and she walked us through the
first chapter of How to Read Braille Music, the old first edition. She
then sent us a print and a Braille copy of the dictionary of Braille music
signs. I have those books to this day and truly, it was through her
encouragement and the quiet insistence of my college teacher, that I grew from
resistant skeptic to total convert. It's not that I never use my aural
skills. I do. But when I want to learn everything I can about a
piece I go to Braille music whenever I can. I am glad Bettye is no longer
suffering. But there is no doubt of her widespread influence on the
Braille music field and on the lives of so many and she will be
missed.

So did I, in fact, I still
have a copy of it on the bottom shelf of my closet of all places. Should
brush it off and reread it so i can get back in to at least reading. All
your messages are being archived in our MENVI staff dropbox and maybe we'll do
something for the journal, I'll be talking to Richard about this. Keep
the great words coming.
