Hello again,
It just occurred to me that, although NLS does not have Mahler's First Symphony in braille,
There is the first song from his Kindertotenlieder, in full orchestration.
This may be found in "Norton Anthology of Western Music, II, Classic,
Romantic, Modern" edited by Palisca.
The number for this book is BRM 29080, and the song is selection number 132.
This would provide another example of Mahler's orchestration, and you can download it from BARD.

Hello,
If the professor is mostly interested in the third movement of the Mahler First Symphony, then concentrate on that.
The scoring of this movement is light most of the time, with a lot of solos, so even a recordeing can give you a fairly accurate idea of what's going on.
And if you can get this section in braille, it probably won't be that many pages.

Dear MENVI list members,

I know I have posted to this list about past music courses I
was preparing to take in college. Now as I am finish preparing
all my materials for the last required musicology credit needed
to complete my minor, I have a short list of scores that are not
available in any of the commonly used Braille music
databases/libraries. These are mostly orchestral scores or opera
excerpts in which the music is orchestral. Based on my research
on these pieces and the professor's preferences for something
which seems to exactly map onto the actual print score, I'm not
sure how helpful piano reductions would be of these large
orchestral arrangements. The list is as follows:

-Dvorak, String Quartet in F, Op. 96
- Mahler, Symphony No. 1 in D (especially Mvt. 3)-the score of
the whole symphony appears to be more than 160 print pages)
- Wagner, Tannh?user Rome Narration, from Tannh?user Act III
("Inbrunst im Herzen")
- Wagner, Tristan und Isolde, Love Duet from Act II
("Liebesnacht")

Is it possible that any of you may have access to Braille
versions of these pieces? I have a good feeling that the Mahler
symphony might take up an essential part of the course given its
length and complexity. If it simply does not exist in any form
or is too much of an undertaking to have transcribed somewhere, I
will make the professor aware of this. Given that he has been
accommodating when I took his course last semester, he may be
able to change up the work inventory slightly to accommodate me
and the other students. Any responses/suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Daniel

Hi,

Is there the possibility of asking the professor to truncate some of
these pieces? When I took music history courses the professor allowed
me to do extra listening analysis rather than read the scores. He
came to the conclusion on his own that I would probably gain the
salient information from listening rather than by trying to read every
note, and that was enough for him. However, most of the time the
other students had the score to follow along while they were listening
to excerpts, so it really didn't make much of a difference according
to my professor's teaching style whether anyone really followed the
score or not.

Still, over 100 pages for a score, especially when you consider that
the score will be significantly bigger in braille, seems a bit much.
I'm all for doing what everyone else does, but this seems like one of
those things that would be reasonable to truncate a bit if possible.

Hello, all! I've been working on an online utility for creating braille
scores and I'd like to share it with the list in the hopes of getting some
feedback on it.

The utility is available at <http://tobyrush.com/braillemusic/notator/>.
Rather than translating music scores from MusicXML, it allows the creation
and editing of scores in 100% braille music notation. It simplifies the
process by interpreting the braille characters as musical symbols
automatically.

The goal of the program is to foster the creation of legible, efficient and
elegant braille music scores by anyone, sighted or not. You do not have to
be familiar with braille or braille music to use the program, but users can
learn the basic elements of both as they work with the utility.

Scores created in the utility can be saved on a user's computer for future
editing, or exported as a BRF file for embossing.

While I designed the utility with sighted users in mind, it is also 100%
compliant with screen readers like VoiceOver and JAWS. I am sighted and do
not use a screen reader regularly, so I'm especially interested in how well
it works with this interface.

Anyway, more information is available at the link above; there is a User
Guide there and a Quick Start for Screen Reader Users as well. The utility
is still in development, and will continue to improve based on any feedback
I receive. Thanks!

Go to the Alliance for Braille Literacy and click on the "Call for Action" where they explain how BANA has no authority to change our braille Code and some schools are resisting this. Very interesting letter.
