Chella, good luck with this!
While I can see where your Mom is coming from regarding spontaneous
unexplainable heeling, how likely is that to happen? Yes, there's
always a chance, just as there is always a chance the Earth will be
hit by a giant asteroid tomorrow.
Two things to consider about prosthetics:
1. I've been told that prosthetic eyes look indistinguishable from
real eyes nowadays. We live in a world where, for better or worse,
people make instant judgements when they meet someone based a lot
on their appearance. I have no idea what your eyes look like
currently, and as a totally blind person myself I can't imagine
either, but prosthetic eyes may help out socially. i.e. they may be
cosmetically pleasing to anyone who sees them. I realize as blind
people that we don't make these sorts of judgements, and we're much
better people for it, but many many people do.
2. If your real eyes are causing you significant discomfort, which
it sounds like they are, prosthetic eyes may alleviate this!
Chris
P.S. Don't forget you'll also be able to pop an eye out for big
reactions at parties.
