That is how I do it when I can't sing certain notes but that is while I 
play trumpet, now if I had an idea to add to say a friend's project, 
then, I'd sing before playing, unless I choose to sing internally, and 
breathing is a must for phrasing...unless you happen to be Kenny G! LOL! 
don't get me started! Sure he has Athsma, but that shouldn't excuse him 
to use proper breathing technique for his sax.
