It's not only jazz players.  I've heard a lot of concert pianists do the same thing.  They know the music sings and so they also sing.  And other instrumentalists do, too.  Yo Yo Ma sometimes, for instance.

In a way it's kinda like tennis players let out that big "whuff" when they hit the ball.  Now THAT is REALLY annoying.
