[Menvi-discuss] SATB Writing?

I propose that playing a composition in progress on a keyboard, especially two parts in combination, strengthens the rules one is learning. After time, and sooner than one might think, the hands seem to almost warn of parallels and the like. That alone would likely never serve as a gatekeeper, but combined with carefully listening to the result of what's being played has proven necessary for me.

Piano playing is not going to teach part-writing skills. Writing in parts will, though.

Hello,

I am a vocalist, but I can get around the piano just fine. Just don’t ask me to play Chopin!

I do hang around the piano while I compose, I have my computer on my lap and I’m playing the piano with my left hand. I’m also playing the piano in lime.

Thank you,

Brandon,

Do you play a keyboard instrument? If so, I’ll check back in with some suggestions.

Hello,

I’m wondering if anyone has any good ideas on how to keep track of SATB writing? I’m reading the rules, but I can’t see the pretty pictures it’s supposed to be making. I'’m now just following the rules of only doubling the tonic and dominant, resolving down to the tonic from the 7th, only removing the 5th, and not crossing voices. I am having trouble looking out for parallel octaves or 5ths, the 4 types of motion, extended leaps and just checking my work in general.

I’m using Lime atm, but I don’t have a Braille display yet... I’m trying to get one though.

Any suggestion's on how to easily follow these rules would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Brandon Keith Biggs
