Think of your jaw as a hinge; when opening mouth, think of the jaw as
opening toward the floor. Also, think of opening your mouth as if a doctor
were looking into your throat; you want the air in the voice to go out, not
up. If you pull your jaws forward, the air will be going up; not out.

Subject: [Menvi-discuss] need help with voice lesson issues
Hello,
I recently started taking voice lessons with a new instructor.
We have a competition coming up in a week, but we are running
into some major roadblocks. First, my teacher is trying to teach
me how to open my mouth more when I sing. She tells me that my
jaw goes forward instead of going down (hope that makes sense.)
Does anyone have any tips on getting me to understand the
difference? Also, in a voice and articulation class I am taking,
we are working a lot with posture. The instructor has been
teaching us to keep our feet parallel underneath our hips. He
has begun using tape to help guide my foot placement, but is
there another way of reinforcing this concept without using the
tape so I don't become dependent on the tape being there all the
time? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
