Thanks for mentioning the Boss TU80.
I second your recommendation of ear training, but I'd recommend it 
for everybody.  I teach mainly sighted guitar students, and for 
some of them, they've never really listened intently while playing, 
usually too focused on something on paper or usually some video on 
Youtube instead.
