On my metronome, the button moves up and down with every click.

Debra, there is nothing tricky about this once you've had some
practice.

You don't say what kind of metronome you have.

If it is an analog pyramid-shaped metronome, you can probably mark
the front of it with something, place marks at important tempo
spots, every 30 bpm or something to give you a rough guide to go by.

if it is a quartz dial type metronome, it probably starts at 40 bpm
at its lowest setting. Just Count the clicks as you turn the knob.
if you need to, get someone sighted to check the amounts each click
of the knob represent. i.e. check with someone as to the scale of
the knob at various points. It won't always be 1 beat per minute
per click. For example, one that I use changes 2 bpm per click
between 40 and 60, 3 bpm from 60-72, 4 bpm I believe up to 100, 6
bpm above 100 etc. Also, mark some positions around the dial if you
need to. I don't, as I can feel where the little arrow on the knob
is pointing on my metronome.

If you have a digital metronomne with up and down buttons, you'll
need to figure out the same thing - how many button presses does it
take to get from one speed to another? If one button press equals 1
bpm change in tempo, then just count how many times you press the
up or down button. Always start at a position you know. In other
words, if it remembers where you set it, always leave it at a
reference speed when you are done using it. When you turn it back
on the next time, it will be at that speed. Or, find out what the
minimum speed is, perhaps 40 bpm. So, start at it's slowest speed
and just keep track of where you are as you speed it up.

If your metronome is digital and has a tap tempo feature, you can
press a button at the speed you want it to click, and it will do so.

If you have a clock or watch that ticks once per second, or can
tune into an international time signal like WWV, do so. There are
60 seconds in a minute, right? So the clicking of that clock or
watch is 60 beats per minute. Twice that speed is 120 bpm, three
ticks per second is 180 bpm, four per second is 240 bpm etc..
Practice enough with a reliable reference to have some idea what
various tempos sound like. In other words, after awhile, you'll get
an idea of approximately how fast or slow various tempi feel to you.

If you're using a metronome on your computer, ia software metronome
such as Metronome Pro from PG Music, or as part of a sequencer
program like sonar, you can just enter the beats per minute and the
note value per beat into an edit field.
